Eotech 518 Review
The Eotech 518 is the natural evolution of the classic Eotech 512. The Eotech series of holographic weapon sights are designed for medium and short range engagements and utilize an intriguing and beneficial reticle. This Eotech 518 is comparable in purpose to a red dot sight, but it reticle is more complex and more useful than a simple red dot. The Eotech 518 is an sq window which works with unlimited eye relief, and once using it while the two eyes are open you have an unlimited field of view.
What is New In 518? The Eotech 518 and Eotech 512 are alike in functionality in distinct ways. They share the same batteries, the battery life, and reticles. Where they disagree is in the ergonomics of the optics. The Eotech 512 utilize ambidextrous controls set on the back of the optics, the Eotech utilizes side-mounted controls. These controls turn the optic on, and change the illumination setting, both brightening and dimming it. Most prefer side mounted controls because they can be adjusted without breaking the line of sight. Some left-handers may prefer the ambient controls though. Side mounted controls make working with nighttime vision or even a magnifier much easier as well.
Eotech 512 vs 518 controls. 512 and 518 controls positioning. The Eotech 518 utilizes a fast detach mount in place of the standard Eotech Picatinny mount. This allows a more even application of tension when combined to a rail. This makes the Eotech 518 sit a little higher than an optic, but make co seeing with iron sights easier. The Eotech 518 is compatible with laser battery caps that connect to the optics and act as both night vision and lasers. Unboxing The Eotech 518. The Eotech box is one of my favorites and in my view is what should set the industry standard.
The Eotech is 450 dollars habit which comes in a shockproof and water case. This case is blocking extremely tight and shields the optic from whatever you can toss at it. No paperboard to be found here. This polymer case is full of custom cut foam that protects the optics. There’s a manual and warranty info and that’s about it. Verification 518 full features on Amazon! The Eotech 518 works out of a conventional double A battery. Standard batteries offer 600 hours of continuous use and lithium-ion batteries provide 1, 000 hours of use. This sounds impressive but is reduced compared to industry standards. For instance, Aimpoint Micro T-1 provides 50, 000 hours of continuous use.
Eotech 518 reticle. The reason being the holographic reticle is more complex to create and utilizes light. And therefore results in higher battery use. The reticle is the A65 to be particular. This reticle creates a 68 MOA circle with four stadia on the left, right, top and bottom. In the center sits just one 1 MOA red dot. The reticle is supposed to be utilized as a multi-purpose reticle for both close and medium range engagements. First Impression. The 68 MOA ring is designed for use at the close selection. Shooters put the target on the circle and start pulling the trigger.
At moderate ranges, the 1 MOA red dot is used for photos up to 200 yards with a 5.56 round. In 200 yards the little point is simple to use, but no matter the shot on a moving target is a challenge. This reticle is easy to use and is very versatile. The controls are easy to use and self-explanatory. The upward arrow makes it brighter and also the down arrow dims it. The elevation and windage turrets are simple to move and easy to sight in. The Eotech 518 has 20 daytime configurations but lacks an option for night vision.
This isn’t a significant concern to most shooters, and also the Eotech 538 offers night vision compatibility if desired. The shortage of night vision compatibility does bring the cost down significantly and spending budget is obviously a concern. Testing It Out. The fast detaches lever makes mounting the optics locks and simplistic the optics down to the rifle. The QD lever is an absolute advantage in this optics and attaching it’s locktite free and won’t budge after thousands of rounds of ammunition. Zeroing is somewhat different than the typical rifle and is rougher. I zeroed at 25 yards and my zero consisted of stopping the reticle till it matched with my group and phoning it.
After zeroing we set up at ten yards with 3 men sized targets and start doing basic exercises. These drills included pairs, controlled couples, refusal to stop exercises and fast transitions. With one person calling from the drill and target we were to take, we were kept on our toes. If somebody called pair, target three, or refusal to stop the drill, the targets 2 and 1, we were needing to swap targets on a whim. Get Eotech 518 With The Best Price Here!.
That is among the best parts of the Eotech, how fast and correctly it enables you to swap from target to target, and also fast transitions. The Eotech shines in close range combat and utilizing the Bindon aiming concept the optic becomes an expansion of your very own eyes. Backing off to some hundred yards the mind is capable of participating. This optic isn’t made for breaking clays, or spinning dueling trees, it is made to hit human targets and then realm the Eotech principles. In 100 yards we can exercise the same exercises, but with a bit more time in between shots.
In 100 yards the mind is spot on, somewhat lower, but nothing intense on target. When paired with a magnifier such as G33 the Eotech 518 can rule the scope, as well as the battlefield.
